Worked to Pay for College Education
To help pay for her education, Maria worked an average of 40
hours per week. In 1987,
she enrolled in Indiana University. She followed her interest
in performing, writing, and teaching through her studies at IU. |

Performed with IU Choral Ensemble
Maria was invited to
perform with the widely-recognized IU Choral Ensemble featuring
gospel and spiritual music. She toured with the group
throughout Indiana, Ohio, New York and Canada. Maria was
frequently featured as a soloist at performances. |

Volunteered with Headstart and
Adult Literacy
During College, Maria volunteered with Head Start and the
community adult literacy program.
As a student teacher, Maria taught English, theater and
communication. |

Graduated Early from IU with
Bachelor's Degree
Maria graduated early from IU in December 1990 with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Secondary English Education.
Alongside her work schedule and volunteer efforts, she attended
classes full-time during both the school year and the summers.
During her college years, she demonstrated a commitment for hard
work and perseverance. |

Balanced Motherhood and Law
School
Maria balanced law school at Indiana University School of Law at
Indianapolis with motherhood.
During her second year of law school, Maria married and gave
birth to her son Drake on June 19, 1993. Maria focused on
criminal law, procedure and justice which began her work as an
advocate for the people of Indiana.

Tried First Case as Law Student
As a third year law
student Maria won her first major felony trial in connection
with the law school’s Criminal Law Practice Clinic and the
county Public Defender’s Office. She balanced her legal
studies and family until she graduated in May of 1994. She was
sworn into practice on October 31, 1994 before the state courts
and federal district courts of Indiana.
Since becoming licensed to practice law, Maria has always
maintained good standing with the Indiana State Bar. Maria is a
member of the Floyd County, Indiana State and American Bar
Associations and former member of the Sherman Minton Inns of
Court and the American Trial Lawyers Association.
As a Deputy Prosecutor and attorney for the Floyd County Office
of Family and Children, Maria fought crime and worked for the
rights of children, elderly and the abused. She gained a wealth
of experience in the courtroom as a trial attorney. In private
practice, Maria has helped hundred of homeowners secure the
title to their property while serving as a judge pro tem and
teaching business law as an Adjunct Professor at IU Southeast.
The Granger Law Office is located at 415 East Main Street in New
Albany. Many of you remember the historic building as it used
to house the New Albany license branch. |
